A mix of commercial and residential buildings, Bayview features predominantly single family homes, townhomes, and some newer condo developments. Bayview’s business district is one of the oldest in California, and is centered along the main corridor, Third Street, which has the T-line running to downtown.
A vibrant hub of creativity, Bayview is home to a variety of arts and cultural organizations, as well as an eclectic food and drink scene. With vast stretches of Bay shoreline, outdoor enthusiasts can spot ospreys, herons, and other shorebirds along Bayview Park, Heron’s Head Trail or at Candlestick Point Park.
Hidden Gem
Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theatre is a San Francisco Landmark and was inducted into the National Register of Historic Buildings in 2011. The non-profit Bayview Opera House, Inc. provides cultural and artistic programming and performance spaces.
Historical Point
In 1865, via a wooden structure called the Long Bridge that crossed Mission Bay, horse car service from downtown brought race fans to the ornate Bay View Park Racetrack and hotel. This popular entertainment spot was not fated to last long; the hotel burned down in the early 1880s and the race track was subsequently abandoned. The site is now home to the Bay View K.C. Jones Playground.
