When San Franciscans think of “The Sunset,” they mostly think of fog, but this vast area offers much more. From surfing spots and lush botanical gardens to international dining and world-class art, the not- always-sunny Sunset has something for everyone.
The sleepy Outer Sunset’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean gives it a beachy, chill vibe. Charming candy-colored stucco houses, largely built between the 1930’s – 1950’s, line the wide streets. You’ll find laid-back cafes, quirky shops, Irish pubs, and an array of food from upscale California cuisine to dim sum and everything in between.
The Inner Sunset offers a more bustling vibe and a mix of homes, condos, and apartment buildings. The nearby stretch of Golden Gate Park is home to popular attractions like the de Young Museum, the Conservatory of Flowers, California Academy of Sciences, the Botanical Gardens, and more.
Hidden Gem
Playland at 43rd Avenue is a collaborative multi-use community park, hosting a variety of special events and activities for residents of the Outer Sunset.
Historical Point
Before construction of the Twin Peaks Tunnel in 1917, The Sunset was a massive, uninhabited area of sand dunes and coastal scrub called "Outside Lands” by San Franciscans (the name is now familiar as the three-day music festival in Golden Gate Park held every August).
